09 Aug Electric Steering Rack Reset After Fitting
Fitting a new steering rack can be a task in itself but there is a lot more to get right as initially the new steering rack will not behave correctly until the necessary sensors have been reset.
Initialise the Torque Sensor
The torque sensor informs the motor of the rack of the amount of assistance required. The torque sensor needs to be initialized after the rack has been fitted. This procedure can be executed with an OBD-II scanner with live data, and it is usually located under the steering system in the function list of the corresponding dealer diagnosis tool.
Reset the Steering Angle Sensor
Complete a full left-to-right lock cycle and return to centre. Drive forward a short distance and within that drive cycle complete a steering angle sensor zero (initialization) on most modern steering systems, the behaviour without this step will typically manifest as a pull and/or Stability Control system anomalies.
Check Wheel Alignment
A replacement Rack will move the track rod end(s) and so will need to be realigned after fitment. Use wheel alignment check to check for correct toe, camber and castor setting.
Clear Warning Lights and Test Drive
Clear any warning lights that are displayed.
